Most people complain about shaky mathematical background and so based on that, feel they lack what it takes to stand out in the world today. This article promises to highlight some of the mathematical skills one needs to be at least okay in the affairs of life.
What is mathematics and its role in our daily life anyway?
Mathematics is
the science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and arrangement. It is
all around us, in everything we do. Since the beginning of recorded history, mathematics discovery has been at the forefront of every civilized society, and in
use in even the most primitive of cultures. Mathematics makes our life orderly
and prevents chaos.
Qualities that are nurtured when you take maths course
Certain qualities that are nurtured by mathematics is:
the power of reasoning,
creativity,
abstract or spatial thinking,
critical thinking,
problem-solving ability and even
effective communication.
Throughout history, humans have faced the need to measure and communicate about time, quantity and distance.
Without mathematics, it would be very difficult for people to communicate. With all these,
How much of mathematics does one need to have successful life?
Mathematics is a discipline, there are people trained
to handle the very hardcore aspect of this science. What is needed is our
ability to comfortably have communication around time, shapes and distances.
Here is a quick
one.
What is 6 cubed?
What about 0.25 of 64?
Can you try
solving in your head?
If you got any
within 5 seconds, you easily have what it takes to stand out in today’s economy.
If you got any
between 5 and 20 seconds, you will be fine.
If you got any
between 20 and 40 seconds, you should be ok but try avoiding quantitative tasks.
If you took 40 seconds to a few minutes, you will really need to practice a lot so you could stand out during negotiation and others.
If you took more than a few minutes, well, it is not late; you can still master the science!
Doing this does
not necessarily guarantee you have all that it takes. It does play a role,
since everything we do today revolves around numbers either directly or indirectly
and so it becomes paramount to be comfortable with numbers!
However, you do
not really need calculus, matrices, complex numbers, etc… you need to be
comfortable, ideally damn comfortable, with the basics - addition, subtraction,
multiplication, division, fractions, percentages. If that is you, do not worry much about the maths,
worry about getting or creating the opportunities that will position you display
it.
