Mathematics and life today!

Most people complain about shaky mathematical background and so based on that, feel they lack what it takes to stand out in the world today. This article promises to highlight some of the mathematical skills one needs to be at least okay in the affairs of life.

What is mathematics and its role in our daily life anyway?

Mathematics is the science that deals with the logic of shape, quantity and arrangement. It is all around us, in everything we do. Since the beginning of recorded history, mathematics discovery has been at the forefront of every civilized society, and in use in even the most primitive of cultures. Mathematics makes our life orderly and prevents chaos.

Qualities that are nurtured when you take maths course

Certain qualities that are nurtured by mathematics is:

 the power of reasoning,

creativity,

abstract or spatial thinking,

critical thinking,

problem-solving ability and even

 effective communication.

Throughout history, humans have faced the need to measure and communicate about time, quantity and distance.

Without mathematics, it would be very difficult for people to communicate. With all these,

How much of mathematics does one need to have successful life?

Mathematics is a discipline, there are people trained to handle the very hardcore aspect of this science. What is needed is our ability to comfortably have communication around time, shapes and distances.

Here is a quick one.

What is 6 cubed?

 What about 0.25 of 64?

Can you try solving in your head?

If you got any within 5 seconds, you easily have what it takes to stand out in today’s economy.

If you got any between 5 and 20 seconds, you will be fine.

If you got any between 20 and 40 seconds, you should be ok but try avoiding quantitative tasks.

If you took 40 seconds to a few minutes, you will really need to practice a lot so you could stand out during negotiation and others.

If you took more than a few minutes, well, it is not late; you can still master the science!

Doing this does not necessarily guarantee you have all that it takes. It does play a role, since everything we do today revolves around numbers either directly or indirectly and so it becomes paramount to be comfortable with numbers!

However, you do not really need calculus, matrices, complex numbers, etc… you need to be comfortable, ideally damn comfortable, with the basics - addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages. If that is you, do not worry much about the maths, worry about getting or creating the opportunities that will position you display it.

Why are computer languages written in zeros and ones

In the beginning - there were computers based on base-10 logic and also on base-3 logic. The trouble with doing that - and the reason we don’t do it these days - lies at the lowest possible level of the underlying electronics. Suppose you have a wire and a flashlight bulb and you connect a 1.5 volt battery to it so the voltage jumps from 0 volts (no battery) to 1.5 volts (powered by the battery). The voltage  doesn’t  actually jump instantaneously from one to the other. It climbs gradually from 0 to 1.5 volts over some very small fraction of a second. So at some point, the voltage will be (say) 0.4 volts - or 0.7 volts - before it finally settles on 1.5 volts. Also - if the wire is long enough - and has some resistance to it - the voltage won’t ever reach 1.5 volts - it’ll top out at (say) 1.2 volts or something. Now - consider if you have a base-10 computer - and just one digit travels from A to B along a wire. If the computer is running at 1.5 volts then maybe we u...

Digital Economy and Unemployment

The disruption technology has brought to almost every field it is introduced to, is leading  to the rapid rise in unemployment leaving the option for entrepreneurship. With many geared toward becoming entrepreneurs thinking it’s the only way to financial freedom, it’d be prudent to understand the main causes of the challenge. Getting abreast with  current information/knowledge and developing requisite skills needed for the new industry is necessary for survival! Wondering how to start your entrepreneurial journey? https://understanddigitaleconomy.blogspot.com/2020/08/becoming-entreprenuer.html It is very important to know technology is disrupting industries, jobs and everything it touches! It’d interest one to also know we live in a changed World today. Same rules  hardly win in this Economy!  Businesses are the economy. When businesses do well, the economy does well. In the world today, businesses are automated which is pretty helpful with disadvantages. Automation...

COVID 19 – Pros and Cons of Working from home.

Aside IT companies, whose work could be remote, other industries in the event of the pandemic are learning to perform some of their tasks at home. With the rapid growth of technology, it is obvious the future of most of what we do today can be done remotely. What impact would this new development of Work from Home have on us as a people? Learn more on today's economy? https://understanddigitaleconomy.blogspot.com/2020/08/digital-economy-and-unemployment.html Many see Work from Home as a solution for a middle-aged manager who is commuting long and gets huge distraction at office with the politics. The solution is paraded as a silver bullet across all worker segments now. It is a double edge sword. I have done Work from Home in various forms for quite many times. The advantages include helping cities become green by reducing commute and reducing the population [you do not need to live in cities]. It enables many women and caretakers to get back into work without having to give...
